Pope Benedict XVI is giving Europe some well needed blunt words on ethics and cultural decline. As he left Italy for his visit to Germany, he issued a statement directed squarely at the Italian Government of Silvio Berlusconi: “The moment in which I leave Italian territory is marked by my wish for an intensive ethical renewal for the good of my beloved Italy.” When he arrived in Germany he bluntly lamented the increasingly indifference toward religion on Germany. He preached about the “dictatorship of relativism” and the secular ideology of “anything goes.” He did also note that there is one segment of Germany’s population that does continue to take its faith seriously: Muslims.
This is good news for Europe and the for the West in general. Europe is in cultural and moral decline, even more quickly than economic decline. The economic troubles are in the end a distraction from the root causes here. The fact that Europe has lost its way: its faith in western values, Judeo-Christian principles, and the superiority of western culture. Perhaps Europe will listen, before it’s too late.
