Former Secretary of the Navy under the Reagan administration, John Lehman enlightens us on his recent article commemorating 100 years of US Naval Aviation. In this article, Lehman describes the particular culture of the pre-WWI daredevils to the current US Navy. He says that it is this rare culture in the US Navy that allows naval aviators to be cool under pressure and make quick informed decisions during high-risk situations. This culture of “swagger” in the US Navy is currently under attack by groups that want the Navy to conform to stringent guides of political correctness. This was apparent during the Tailhook scandal in which more than 100 aviators were let go after allegations of sexual harassment. Additionally, Lehman talks defense budget. He believes that the US must fix the way we are spending our money. Instead of supporting the bloat of bureaucrats, we should focus more on maintaining our modern naval aviation in order to continue to provide security in international waters.
