German EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger thinks its time to get tough with the Greeks. Apparently incapable of dealing with their deficit problems on their own, Oettinger is suggesting that the European Union should take over tax collection in Greece. The country has long been plagued by tax cheats, an under ground economy, and corruption. Another suggestion the conservative politician makes: countries like Greece who are “deficit sinners” should be required to fly their flags at half mast. “It would just be a symbol,” he said, “but would still be a big deterrent.”
Oettinger’s got a point. Shame might be the only thing left to force the Greeks to change their ways.
