There’s an interesting theory circulating out there: the riots in the UK are actually the result of a shortage of illegal drugs. The British police have been so successful at clamping down on the drug trade that drug gangs and drug users had no choice but to start a riot. What’s the proof? There is plenty of evidence out there that the Brits have been cutting down on the supply of illicit drugs. There is, for example, a widespread heroin shortage in the UK, according to the International Drug Policy Consortium. And just days before the riots began, law enforcement officials arrested 70 crime lords involved in the drug trade. Chris Cook over at the European Tribune argues that this strategy of “disruption” to combat the drug trade could have triggered the riots.
If true, and that’s a big IF, I don’t know if this is good news or bad news. Is the drug culture capable of this kind of societal disruption? The rioters and looters seem too coherent and focused to be drug addicts.
