Evidently, Osama bin Laden was tapped out, or, to be more precise, double tapped out courtesy of SEAL Team Six as he exited his Abbottabad compound for the great beyond.
After bursts of fire over 40 minutes, 22 people were killed or captured. One of the dead was Osama bin Laden, done in by a double tap — boom, boom — to the left side of his face. His body was aboard the choppers that made the trip back. One had experienced mechanical failure and was destroyed by U.S. forces, military and White House officials tell National Journal.
Who would have thought that bin Laden’s last act would have been to turn the other cheek? Unfortunately for him, it likely wasn’t voluntary, having nothing to do with his belonging to the religion of peace, or a last minute conversion to Christianity. No, it likely had more to do with his left cheek dancing cheek to nose with the ornery end of a weapon in the hands of one of America’s finest. What a fitting kiss goodbye for such a notorious terrorist. Let’s hope it was as good for him as the news has been for us.
However, this does raise an interesting question, even while I regret seeing such an event politicized by anyone. It’s difficult to imagine any terrorist, even bin Laden, being tapped out during a similar operation during the Bush administration without hearing shouts of murder, or high crimes and misdemeanors from the usual suspects on the Left.Instead, many of them seem to be convinced this somehow makes Obama General George S. Patton, General Douglas MacArthur and various other effective military commanders all rolled into one.
Frankly, I’ve always felt Obama would pull the trigger on this type of operation and see no reason to not praise him for doing so. But it might have been nice to see a bit more consistency from the Left today in this regard. So, say what you will about Glenn Greenwald, I may not agree with him on this, or much else, but you certainly can’t accused him of being a hypocrite, as are so many on the Left now celebrating the kill.
I’d have strongly preferred that Osama bin Laden be captured rather than killed so that he could be tried for his crimes and punished in accordance with due process (and to obtain presumably ample intelligence)….
I personally don’t derive joy or an impulse to chant boastfully at the news that someone just got two bullets put in their skull — no matter who that someone is — but that reaction is inevitable: it’s the classic case of raucously cheering in a movie theater when the dastardly villain finally gets his due.
