Via the Wall Street Journal Online. It seems the not-so-lovable, to many, Koran burning pastor, Terry Jones is at it, again. This time, near a mosque in Detroit.
Authorities in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn are trying to head off a confrontation at a rally planned Friday to protest Islamic law by Quran-burning Christian pastor Terry Jones outside the biggest U.S. mosque.
The city of Dearborn, meanwhile, has asked Mr. Jones to move his rally two to three miles away to one of its two designated “free speech zones,” from the planned site near the Islamic Center of America. The city–home to Ford Motor Co. and one of the largest Arab-American communities in the U.S.–cited concerns about traffic and parking near the mosque, which is near two churches hosting Good Friday services.
The First Amendment seems pretty clear on this, does it not? So, is there some sort of a bridge to these free speech zones, or does even having them constitute an abridgment somehow taking place?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Abridged: b : to reduce in scope
Well, to me, they certainly seem to have been abridged in field, if not scope, in Detroit.
Judging from other content there, I’d say this looks like a fairly liberal blog. They want Jones to be committed – at least for a spell. Those krazy kidz at Daily kos are denouncing it, hurling the usual insults as they go.
What could possibly go wrong? I mean, dull-witted, Islamaphobic bigots, armed and provoking people who simply try to attend a service or prayers?
The ACLU has, so far, been defending Jones, just as they defended neo-Nazis when they sought to march in Skokie years ago. What say you? Has Detroit gone a bridge too far with their free speech zones? We know the grassroots Left already has. Nothing new in that, unfortunately. And, do we as a society have to tolerate the likes of Terry Jones, or should we join with many on the Left in condemning him? And, of course, there’s always stoning as a last resort, even if the Left one day succeeds in taking our guns!
God bless America!
