Obviously Democrats are serious about cutting federal spending. Why else would they propose an amendment to forbid the Pentagon from spending money sponsoring NASCAR? Last year the Army spent a whopping $7 million on a NASCAR sponsorship. (No other branch is a sponsor.) Research shows that 1 in 5 NASCAR fans is a military veteran. And who can deny that the advertising campaign is an effective way to reach possible recruits? As Ramsey Poston of NASCAR puts it, “NASCAR fans are the kind of people who fight America’s wars, which would put into question the wisdom of banning the military’s ability to reach out to them.”
My instincts tell me this has nothing to do with wasted money. The National Journal has a better explanation for the Democrats’ assault on NASCAR: “It is also a clear indication that Democrats think that the NASCAR voting bloc is not voting with them now or anytime in the future.”
