President Obama made clear yesterday that he is determined to get Senate approval on the New START Treaty before Christmas. His press spokesman actually predicted that it would happen – thanks, in part, to forward-leaning comments made in recent days by Republican Senators John McCain and George Voinovich.
As a reminder to any senators inclined to agree to rubber-stamp this treaty in the dwindling remaining legislative days of the 111th Congress, the Center for Security Policy today rolled out an innovative package of new short videos that illuminate why America’s foes are thrilled at that prospect. Find out why Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Hu Jintao, North Korea’s Kim Jong-il, Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venzuela’s Hugo Chavez are rooting for the U.S. disarmament required by the New START Treaty – and why Americans, and their elected representatives in the Senate, should be opposed to it.

The question occurs: If New START is going to be so helpful to our enemies – actual and potential – why is President Obama so insistent on it being ratified: before senators can review the negotiating record (which the administration has thus far refused to supply; before balanced hearings can be held (unlike the stacked-deck ones held so far); and before the 11 newly elected Senators who have asked to be able to participate in the ratification of a treaty that will be implemented on their watch are sworn in [link to their letter]? And why on earth would the United States Senate agree to so?
