The most stirring election headline may come from the (UK) Daily Mail: “Republicans seize control as millions of U.S. voters turn their backs on Obama”. (This is what that looks like.)
Other good news comes in from California voters who have rejected Prop. 19, which would have legalized marijuana, and Oklahoma voters who have amended their state constitution to forbid courts to consider sharia (Islamic law) or international law in making their decisions. Numbers USA notes also that the new Congress has elected at least 19 additional “True Reformers,” bring the tally of members strongly committed to reining in the illegal influx of aliens and opposing amnesty to 57.
Over at The Corner, Andy McCarthy links to re-elected Sen. Jim DeMint’s five cardinal rules for the new Congress:
1. No earmarks — if you play the game, they own you.
2. Hire conservative staff — don’t get undermined from within.
3. Don’t be seduced by committee assignments — you have a public platform and, particularly in the Senate, you are not limited by committee assignment or seniority from legislating on any matter.
4. Don’t seek titles in the hierarchy — see no. 3, above.
5. Doing your job takes priority over being reelected to do your job.
If No. 5 sounds a little vague, Michelle Malkin has some clarifying if not also cauterizing thoughts on the general subject. To ensure that conservative victory isn’t lost to the con of “compromise” — a clear and present siren song — Michelle today recalls for the record the vicious cycle of contempt (not compromise) to which conservatives have been subjected since Barack Obama and the Democrats have been in charge, climaxing recently with the 44th president’s disgraceful (and revealing) slur on Americans who oppose his Leftist agenda as “enemies” who deserve to be punished. Among these cruelest cuts, Michelle includes:
“We don’t mind the Republicans joining us,” Obama taunted a few weeks ago. “They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called vocal citizens who protested the federal health care takeover bill during the town hall revolts of 2009 “un-American,” too.
Obama’s pal Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida, whom the president hailed as an “outstanding” member of Congress, accused Republicans of wanting elderly people to “die quickly” and of presiding over a “holocaust in America.”
You get the picture. Michelle’s point is not to forget it. She writes:
As voters who have been maligned by the ruling majority as stupid, unwashed, racist, selfish and violent headed to the polls Tuesday, Democrats released “talking points” attacking Republican leaders who “are not willing to compromise.” But “no compromise” is exactly the message that un-American Americans delivered to Washington this campaign season:
No more compromising deals behind closed doors.
No more compromising bailouts in times of manufactured crisis.
No more compromising conservative principles for D.C. party elites.
No more compromising the American economy for left-wing special interests.
No more compromising transparency and ethics for bureaucratic self-preservation.
The Party of No Compromise is the Party of Principle.
