Senator Kit Bond: Trusting the Russians Without Verification

Senator Kit Bond of Missouri is the vice-chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. In that position, the Senator is privy to the latest classified information on the Obama administration’s most consequential foreign policy initiative, the follow up Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia. Today on Frank Gaffney’s Secure Freedom Radio, the Senator shares the conclusions he has drawn from the latest classified intelligence regarding the START 2 treaty.

It seems, in his estimation, that given the Russians well established record of cheating on arms control treaties, the currently ineffectual verification measures render the treaty a detriment to our national security. According to past congressional testimony by Secretary Clinton and Secretary Gates, the administration is branding the treaty as a bipartisan slam dunk. Yet, more members of the Senate are learning about the ability of the treaty, in its current state, to limit the ability of the U.S. to defend itself without effectively limiting Russia.

The treaty, if passed, can accomplish two things: First, It will be a great step toward the administration’s goal of a United States without nuclear weapons with the a secondary effect of moving both Russia and China a great step forward towards parity with the United States as military and World powers. Second, it will serve as campaign fodder to be touted as a measure of foreign policy credibility for President Obama. That is at least among the Zero Nuke crowd who reason that by leading the world in disarming, the world will follow President Obama. To be clear, the logic suggests that because the U.S. disarms, then Russia, China, and rogue states like North Korea and Iran will disarm.
