Democrat Sean Casten beat Republican incumbent Illinois Rep. Peter Roskam Tuesday evening in a race that was considered a toss-up.
In 2016, Hillary Clinton carried Illinois’s 6th Congressional District, an affluent district west of Chicago. Sean Casten had run on health care and tightening gun laws, while Roskam ran on the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Casten, a political newcomer, is a clean energy entrepreneur, and Roskam was seeking his seventh term in Congress.
Roskam did not attend a nearby rally with President Trump in the final weeks of the campaign unlike other GOP candidates in Illinois, while Casten campaigned with former President Barack Obama over the weekend, according to the Daily Herald.
Roskam has represented his district since 2007. He is considered one of the most pro-free market Republicans in the House and is also one of the most pro-Israel members of Congress.
