President Donald Trump tweeted his support for veteran Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher on Monday morning, offering his endorsement to an incumbent who has the edge in a seat Democrats have spent millions trying to flip.
Trump has used his Twitter feed throughout the midterm election cycle to offer endorsements to candidates. Rohrabacher has been particularly supportive of the president, despite the fact that his district narrowly chose Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
The one exception is the 2017 tax cut, when Rohrabacher joined several other blue-state Republicans in voting against the bill, since the new cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions will result in some residents in high-tax state paying more overall.
Rohrabacher has also focused on his signature issues — including the legalization of marijuana, accompanying a busload of senior citizens to a marijuana dispensary last month.
In addition, Rohrabacher was widely perceived to have won a televised debate with Rouda last month.
Rohrabacher has pulled away from Democrat challenger Harley Rouda in recent polls — although the race is still considered close, and turnout will be the deciding factor. New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg spent $4 million on Rouda’s behalf in the closing days of the race.
