Minnesota’s first congressional district race is an extremely tight battle between Democrat Dan Feehan and Republican Jim Hagedorn, according to a poll released Wednesday.
Feehan led Hagedorn by two points, 47-45, in a KSTP/SurveyUSA poll of 586 likely voters conducted October 17-21. A 4.4 percent margin of error puts the race in a dead heat as Republicans and Democrats strive for control of the House of Representatives in the midterm election. Eight percent were undecided in the survey.
Steven Shier of Carleton college told local ABC5 news that the race is a toss up that will be decided by hard to predict voter turnout.
Feehan held an advantage among women in the poll, 53 percent to Hagedorn’s 38. Hagedorn holds a similar advantage among men with 52 percent support to Feehan’s 41.
Healthcare was far and away the top issue on the minds of Minnesota’s first congressional district with the poll showing 30 percent naming it as an important issue compared to the number two issue of the presidency at 13 percent. Jobs/economy, taxes, and immigration came in just behind at 12, 11, and 10 percent naming these as top issues.
President Donald Trump won the district by double digits in his 2016 presidential bid according to the local news outlet. Trump holds a 46 percent approval rating in that district as Feehan and Hagedorn make their bids for the congressional seat currently held by Democrat Rep. Tim Walz. Walz chose to run for governor of Minnesota instead of re-election to his congressional seat in 2018. The congressional district spans a southern band of the state.
