TEL AVIV – More than half of the Democrats in the House of Representatives have backed a resolution that argues that the Trump administration’s long-anticipated peace plan will only distance the prospects of peace unless it expressly stipulates the notion of a two state solution.

The non-binding motion, backed by the left-wing lobby J Street, calls for “a two-state solution that is consistent with the broadly held consensus positions for resolving the conflict’s final status issues as reflected in previous United States proposals.”

It says that omitting such a solution would “put a peaceful end to the conflict further out of reach.”

Out of 235 in the Democratic caucus, 123 have so far signed up as co-sponsors of the resolution, which was pushed last month by Rep. Alan Lowenthal, D-Calif.

The White House has committed to unrolling the economic portion of its peace proposal at an economic peace workshop in Bahrain on June 25 and 26.

Israel and a number of Arab states, including Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, have accepted the U.S. invitation to attend the conference.

The Palestinians have snubbed the summit.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said recently the Manama summit will “go to hell” along with the Trump administration’s peace plan.

“The Palestinian Authority does not recognize this conference,” Abbas said.

“Trump’s ‘deal of the century’ will go to hell, as will the economic workshop in Bahrain that the Americans intend to hold and present illusions,” he added.

“Whoever is interested in proposing a solution to the Palestinian issue should begin with a diplomatic solution.”

The PA has boycotted the U.S. ever since Trump formally recognized Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital in December 2017.
