TEL AVIV – Israel’s population has reached 8.907 million, an increase of 162,000 from a year ago, with close to 90% of citizens saying they are happy with their lot, according to data published Tuesday by the Central Bureau of Statistics ahead of the Jewish New Year.
Israel’s Jewish population stands at 6.625 million people in the Jewish Year of 5778, comprising 74.4% of the country’s total population. 1.864 million, or 20.9%, are Arab, while the remaining 418,000 are other minorities.
Israel’s population is expected to reach 10 million by late 2024, the bureau said.
44.3% of Israelis self-define as secular, while 21.4% are traditional, 12.3% are traditional with some religious tendencies, 11.5% are religious and 10.2% are ultra-Orthodox.
While 89% said they were satisfied with their lives in general, 37% said they weren’t satisfied with their financial situation. 31% said they struggled to make ends meet every month. An overwhelming majority of 84% said they were in good or very good health. 51% percent said they exercise regularly.
Israel’s fertility rate stands at an average of 3.11 children born per woman, again the highest among OECD countries. The average life expectancy in Israel is also one of the highest in the world, with 84.6 years for women and 80.7 for men.
The data said around 175,000 babies were born in 5778, while 43,000 people died. 25,000 people immigrated to Israel.
52,809 couples were married in 5778 and 14,819 couples divorced.
