Haaretz reports: A pro-Palestinian group funded a 2009 visit by Jeremy Corbyn, the current leader of the UK Labour Party, to Syria, where he met with President Bashar Assad, English-language reports said this week.
The trip, organized and funded by the Palestinian Return Centre (PRC), was held as a part of what reports called a “stunt” to mark the 1917 Balfour Declaration, in which the British announced support for the establishment of a Jewish state in Israel, then under British control.
According to The Australian and Daily Mail, the PRC still contends the U.K. should apologize for the historic pledge.
The group found itself at the center of a storm this week after an audience member said at an event it had organized in the House of Lords that the Jewish people were responsible for the Holocaust and that Israel was comparable to the Islamic State group.
The event was chaired by Jenny Tonge, a former Liberal Democrats peer, who was suspended from the party in the past for anti-Semitic comments. She was once again suspended this week in wake of the event, and resigned shortly after.
