TEL AVIV – Three Iranian citizens were caught in Italy with fake Israeli passports, Israeli authorities were told over Yom Kippur.

Italian authorities deported the three to Turkey via Serbia, according to Israel’s Channel 2 news.

Security agencies are looking into whether the three have been involved in previous attempts to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets.

In January two Iranian nationals were arrested in India after attempting to board a flight using forged Israeli passports at Chennai International Airport.

The two were a married couple aged 25 and 35 who had been living in India for the past decade and were planning to use the fake passports, reportedly made in the southern India state of Goa, to immigrate to the United States.

Two years prior, another pair of Iranians were arrested at the airport in Nairobi, Kenya after attempting to enter the country using fake Israeli passports.

Under the country’s anti-terrorism laws, they were arrested and sentenced to two years in prison in addition to paying a hefty fine.
