124 News reports: The Israeli Defense Forces will fast track plans to develop a new system to combat underground tunnels and other threats from the Gaza Strip after coming under pressure from residents of Israeli communities near the boarder of the coastal enclave.
The multi-pronged defense project, known as the ‘Obstacle’, includes technologies used to detect and combat Hamas-dug tunnels, erecting a high-tech “smart” fence along the Gaza border, and a system to improve Israel’s ability to respond to rocket and mortar shells fired from the Strip.
With an estimated 2.2 billion shekel price tag, the project had been postponed for some time over budgetary concerns.
A representative of Israel’s Defense Ministry has met with IDF Southern Command officers, Israel’s Ynet news agency reports, in order to see the Obstacle’s development fast tracked.
