Saudi social media has reacted to news of a Saudi man sought by police after he shot and critically wounded an obstetrician who delivered his newborn baby.
The physician, a Jordanian national, was called to intervene in the delivery that had been supervised by a female obstetrician and gone awry.
After saving both the mother and the baby, he was approached by the suspect, who allegedly wanted to thank him. He took him to the garden of the hospital, the King Fahed Medical Center in Riyadh, where he shot him in the shoulder apparently in front of children playing nearby, saying that he had been told that the delivery would be carried out by a woman. The physician was rushed to intensive care.
News of the incident went viral on social media.
“It’s primitive, ignorant and stupid,” Farook tweeted.
Mubarak tweeted: “Dear Allah, where is this country heading? From the top of the world to the bottom.”
“This problem exists in many Arab countries but in Saudi Arabia it’s ten times worse because women aren’t allowed to work like men,” Ali wrote.
Abu Abbas weighed in: “It’s not jealousy, it’s primitiveness and ignorance and boorishness. Thank Allah for giving us brain.”
Tareq was reminded of a recent attack on a Christian woman in Egypt, who was beaten and publicly undressed because her son allegedly fell in love with a Muslim woman.
“A Saudi man shoots an obstetrician who delivered his child and removed his wife’s veil,” he tweeted. “In Egypt a woman is undressed and her house set ablaze because her son fell in love with a Muslim.”
He then continued: “The nice thing is that everybody wonders where IS emerged from??!”
One commenter said that he should be executed in the scene of the crime. “It should set an example. If he gets off, we’ll see more of these instances.”
