TEL AVIV – Behind the scenes, Hamas has told Hezbollah that it rejects a resolution passed last week by a panel of Gulf states that designated the Lebanese militia a terrorist organization, a Hamas source told Breitbart Jerusalem.
Unlike other Palestinian terrorist factions – like the Iran-backed Islamic Jihad and Al Sabireen, as well as several Fatah-affiliated organizations – Hamas has publicly remained mum on the subject in an apparent attempt to maintain good relations with Saudi Arabia and other Sunni powers in the region.
In a letter sent to Hezbollah, Hamas “reiterated its support for the resistance and respect for the movement’s armed struggle against Israel, and insisted that the two movements have much more in common than other issues in the region that drive a wedge between us,” the source told Breitbart Jerusalem.
Hamas has repeatedly rejected Iran’s offer of sponsorship, despite Hezbollah’s fervent attempts to undo the divisions between Sunnis and Shi’ites caused by the Syrian conflict, as Breitbart Jerusalem has reported.
Hamas has continuously labored to maintain good relations with Hezbollah, and recently sent the organization several open letters of support, notably after its operatives were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Syria and its headquarters in Beirut was bombed by the Islamic State.
Hamas Spokesperson Mushir al-Masri declined to comment to Breitbart Jerusalem on the matter of private support for Hezbollah.
