JAFFA, ISRAEL – A woman has been selected to head a boys’ school in the United Arab Emirates because of the lack of suitable male candidates, the local press has reported.
The unprecedented appointment of Ras al-Khaima went through smoothly, it was reported, after the new principal “met with the school staff and the parent council.”
The report in the UAE’s popular Al Bayan Arabic language newspaper said the appointment proves women can sometimes be superior to men, and that the Ministry of Education seeks to increase the share of women among headmistresses.
Parents were quoted as saying the move was brave, and stressed that “the only relevant criterion is whether the candidate has the skills for the job.”
