John Bolton: Germany Has Lost Control of Its Borders

The Berlin Christmas market attack shows Germany has lost control of its borders, and Europe cannot cope with open borders, John Bolton has said.

Speaking to Breitbart News Daily Friday morning, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said the European Union’s open-border Schengen agreement has allowed terrorists to travel through the continent with very few checks.

Anis Amri is suspected of driving a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin earlier this week, killing 12 people and injuring dozens others.

After the attack, he managed to escape, fleeing first to France and then to Italy, crossing at least two international borders unchecked.

Ambassador Bolton said that is “precisely the kind of freedom of movement in Europe that the pro-Schengen advocates wanted.”

This freedom of movement, he added, is self-evidently not appropriate for Europe.

“Just because you can go between Maryland and Virginia just as if you’re travelling within Maryland, it doesn’t mean the Europe is ready for that, and yet this is what they’ve exposed themselves to,” he said.

The result of this is that Germany failed to detect potential terrorists entering their country, however the failures of their security services are even wider.

“The tragedy in Berlin proves not only that Germany couldn’t control its borders, it can’t even deal with threats once they’re manifest,” he said, adding: “They tried to deport this fella to Tunisia, but the Tunisian government said ‘we don’t think he’s Tunisian’, so they just let him go. It’s just unbelievable.”

The terror suspect died in a shootout in the Italian city of Milan Friday morning after opening fire on a police officer during a security check.

The ease with which he could travel across Europe will inevitably raise questions over the security of Europe’s internal as well as external borders.

French presidential contender Marine Le Pen said: “This escapade in at least two or three countries is symptomatic of the total security catastrophe that is the Schengen agreement.

“I reiterate my pledge to give back France full control of its sovereignty, its national borders and to put an end to the consequences of the Schengen agreement.”
