The Co-Chair of the Oxford University Labour Club (OULC) has quit, claiming anti-Semitism and support of Islamist terror among left wing students is becoming routine.
In a Facebook announcement, Alex Chalmers slammed “senior members of the club expressing their ‘solidarity’ with Hamas and explicitly defending their tactics of indiscriminately murdering civilians”, and said that concerns about anti-Semitism were dismissed as “just the Zionists crying wolf”.
He also said the club’s Executive was prone to “throwing around the term ‘Zio’ (a term for Jews usually confined to websites run by the Ku Klux Klan) with casual abandon”, and stated that, “a large proportion of both OULC and the student left in Oxford more generally have some kind of problem with Jews”.
The final sticking point for Mr. Chalmers seems to be the OULC voting to support the Oxford Israeli Apartheid Week, described by him as “a movement with a history of targeting and harassing Jewish students and inviting antisemitic speakers to campuses”.
Last year’s Apartheid Week saw prominent Islamists speaking on British campuses and students dressing up as soldiers, running around campuses pretending to shoot Jews.
OULC voted to endorse Labour’s new hard left leader Jeremy Corbyn back in June 2015, a man who has hosted “friends” from the Islamist terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah in Parliament.
The club’s recent ballots, announced on Twitter, indicate the students are fully behind Mr. Corbyn’s hard left stance. They have voted to back scrapping the UK’s nuclear deterrent, to support the iconoclastic historical revisionist ‘Rhodes Must Fall’ campaign, and even to oppose air strikes against Islamic State in Syria.
Mr. Chalmers told Cherwell: ”Leaving OULC was a difficult decision, but it had reached the stage where I no longer recognised the club that I joined last Michaelmas. I hope my decision will go some way in raising awareness of the campus antisemitism that has gone unnoticed for far too long in Oxford.”
