California’s San Mateo County Sheriff’s Association is warning parents not allow their kids to purchase or a carry a cell phone case shaped like a gun.
1200 WOAI reports that the gun-shaped case comes in a variety of colors and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Association warns that kids carrying a black one can be confused with persons carrying real guns. They suggest carrying such a case to school in San Mateo County could end up in “a lot of trouble.”
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Association used a Facebook post suggest the phone case will cause problems even away from school grounds:
Please do not purchase or let your children purchase this cell phone case. Although a novelty, it will create unwanted scrutiny from law enforcement for whoever uses it. Regular citizens will see it and call 911 and then law enforcement will respond accordingly for a subject with a gun call. At minimum, someone will be proned out on the ground until the LEOs can secure the “Phone case” or someone could potentially get shot depending on their actions when LEOs respond.
WOAI notes that a Florida school was placed on lockdown earlier this year after a student brought a gun-shaped cell phone case onto campus.
