The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is rallying behind state lawmakers who seek to ban gun shows at San Francisco’s Cow Palace.
On May 27 Breitbart News reported that lawmakers cited the May 18, 2018, Sante Fe High School in Texas as part of the motivation behind their ban, although the gunman in that attack used firearms that were legally owned by his father.
ABC7 reportsd that the location of the Cow Palace has prevented county leaders in San Francisco and San Mateo from enacting a ban, therefore, those local leaders see action by state lawmakers as an opportunity to enact a ban now.
The Daily Journal reports that Cow Palace has a contract with the Crossroad of the West Gun Shows through 2020 and that a show is currently underway. The two-day show, June 9-10, is expected to “attract some 2,500 to 3,000 people by the time it ends Sunday night.” The gun shows generate $125,000 for Cow Palace each year.
But San Mateo board president David Pine calls the shows a “longtime concern” for county supervisors and made clear they are rallying behind this chance to end them.
Ironically, California does not have a “gun show loophole.” The state banned private gun sales over two decades ago via the implementation of universal background checks. This means every sale at a gun show has to go through a licensed firearms dealer–and a background check–just like all sales at retail. So there is no difference between buying a gun at a gun show and buying one at a brick and mortar gun store.
