The author of California’s most prominent “sanctuary state” law (SB 54) claimed that Orange County’s Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to join the Trump administration’s lawsuit against California this week to court the approval of a “racist” president.

“This kind of obsessive immigrant bashing is embarrassing to the county and its residents, and seems designed to court the approval of a racist President and his cronies,” state Senate President pro Tem Kevin de Leon said this week in a statement.

The Trump administration is arguing that three of California’s “sanctuary state” laws violate the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause, and de Leon’s SB 54, which bars local authorities from honoring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests, is the most prominent of the three “sanctuary” laws.

Orange County—the northern part of the county is home to many blue-collar America-first economic nationalists—voted  to join the Trump administration’s lawsuit on Tuesday. Last week, Los Alamitos’s city council passed an ordinance to defy de Leon’s SB 54.

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted his support for the citizens of Orange County, where President Richard Nixon was born (Yorba Linda) and President Ronald Reagan launched his reelection campaign in 1984 (Mile Square Park).
