The Sacramento Immigration Coalition is training volunteers to identify Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, and to aid the illegal aliens targeted by federal agents.
The Sacramento Bee reports the Coalition has “trained about 60 volunteers,” all of whom will film ICE raids, write down first-hand accounts, and provide illegal aliens with options for legal counsel. The trained volunteers will be wearing yellow hats that say, “Migra Observers.”
Edwin Valdez, a member of Sacramento Area Congregations Together, which is part of the Sacramento Immigration Coalition, told the Bee: “We are basically able to tell ICE, ‘You can’t take people in the dark. We are watching.’”
The Coalition has also reportedly put an “emergency hotline” in place, which it hopes will “double as a resource for undocumented immigrants with questions.”
In addition, the Coalition has indicated that the Trump administration’s enforcement efforts thus far have caused considerable fear among illegals. The Bee quotes ICE explaining, “In Trump’s first 100 days in office, more than 30,000 convicted criminals across the nation were arrested, a 16 percent increase from the year before.”
As early in the year as May 28, Breitbart News reported that the Trump administration’s crack down on illegal immigrants was forcing California farmers to consider the use of technology to replace lost illegal labor. And on July 4, Breitbart News reported that arrests of illegals in San Diego have more than doubled under the Trump administration’s law enforcement approach.
Data published by the San Diego Union-Tribune show that illegal immigrants in southern California are being arrested at roughly the same rate before former President Barack Obama’s era of relaxed border policies.
