Petty Officer 1st Class Gregory Kyle Seerden has been arrested and faces various charges tied to child pornography, according to authorities.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that 31-year-old Seerden was arrested in San Diego — where he is stationed — and that federal agents are “in the process” of returning him to Virginia where he will “be arraigned on four felonies, including production of child pornography.”
The child pornography charges — which also include possession and transportation of the material — were filed on March 31. Those charges stem from a Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) investigation of an unrelated sexual assault allegation from January. In that allegation, a woman claimed she and Seerden went out drinking to the point of passing out. She claimed she awoke in Seerden’s hotel room and that he “was on top of her.” Those allegations have not resulted in charges against Seerden.
10 News reports that NCIS says it discovered the alleged child pornography on Seerden’s phone while investigating the unrelated January allegations. Investigators allegedly found over 70 images and multiple videos that met the criteria for child pornography, “including materials created on the cell phone.”
They also discovered “a photograph… of Seerden sitting on a bed with two, unknown minor females and two unknown minor males.” NCIS investigators said one of the females in the photo is also in a video that was found on Seerden’s phone.
If Seerden is found guilty on the charge of producing the child pornography, he will face “a minimum of 15 years” for that infraction alone.
