A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy shot and wounded a man armed with a knife at the Santa Monica Expo Line station on Tuesday.
The incident occurred just before 1 pm and the train station was subsequently closed for an investigation.
According to Southern California Public Radio station KPCC, Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said a man with knife approached two deputies in the train station. The man allegedly lunged at the deputies and “pulled out a second knife.” He was subsequently shot by one of the deputies.
Mendoza said, “He lunged at one of the deputies in an attempt to stab him. There was a struggle between the deputies and the suspect. At that point, they noticed the suspect was armed with a second knife. And during the struggle, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
The suspect was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The deputies were not injured.
An investigation into the incident was launched by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.
City News Service reports that the suspect was allegedly armed with “two large kitchen-type knives.” The Santa Monica Expo Line reopened around 8 pm Tuesday night.
