A Field poll released September 23 and conducted jointly with the University of California Berkeley shows that 6 out of 10 California Voters support Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom’s gun control Proposition 63.

Prop. 63 requires law-abiding citizens to undergo a background check for ammunition purchases, and institutes a statewide ban on “high capacity” magazines.

According to the poll, 60 percent of California voters support Prop. 63, 30 percent oppose it, and 10 percent are undecided. The poll discovered similar levels of support for Proposition 64, which would legalize the “recreational use of marijuana” in California. 60 percent of California voters support Prop. 64, 30 percent oppose it, and nine percent are undecided.

The Field Poll shows that “voter segments lining up in support of the Prop. 63 gun control initiative are generally the same as those supporting the Prop. 64 marijuana legalization initiative.” Republicans lead the opposition in both cases, while Democrats are the main supporters of each. Independents are siding with Democrats on both propositions as well. And those who identify as “liberal” are the driving force behind both.

For example, Prop. 64 receives 36 percent support from conservatives, 59 percent from moderates, and 78 percent from liberals. Prop. 63 receives 21 percent support from liberals, 62 percent from moderates, and 82 percent support from liberals.
