A mako shark gave four men on a boat the show of their lifetimes when it was caught on the end of one of their hooks and jumped out of the water for about 20 minutes as it vigorously worked to free itself.
According to local ABC News affiliate ABC 10, Captain Mark Martin of San Diego Saltwater Fly Fishing captured video of the incident while he was out on a half day charter trip with three other men. He told ABC 10 that this particular shark looked like it was well over 500 pounds.
Captain Martin posted the video on Facebook and accompanied it with the following caption:
Yep, some big boys around right now!!! Words can’t describe what it is like to see Mako sharks of this size come out of the water like they do.
Time to get out and see some of these sharks in action for yourself. If you have not gone out this season now is the time.
Mako sharks are known to be jumpers. Adults can grow to be up to 15 feet long and can weight up to a ton, depending on their size.
Shark sightings have become more frequent throughout Southern California. Last week, a hammerhead shark was seen off the coast of Newport Beach.
In April, a juvenile great white shark was seen breaching the surface and jumping up into the air at Huntington Beach.
The more frequent sightings are being attributed to the warmer waters, resulting from El Nino. The warmer waters are also attributed to why the sharks have remained in the region lately.
