On Thursday, four “sovereign citizens” temporarily entered the Army National Guard base located near Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
Two of the “sovereign citizens” were men “with long, Duck Dynasty-style beards.” They were accompanied by two women. All four said “they were seeking refuge from terrorism.”
According to the Fresno Bee, the four “spoke about terrorism [once on the base] and one of the women reportedly said she would ‘shoot first and ask questions later,’ apparently in reference to a confrontation with terrorists.”
Fresno police responded to calls about the citizens and believe “the group may have been allowed in by a maintenance man.” The police response included “several…patrol units” and “a police tactical team of about half a dozen.”
The FBI describes “sovereign citizens” as “extremists … comprising a domestic terrorist movement, which, scattered across the United States, has existed for decades.” As an example, the FBI points to Terry Nichols, the man “who helped plan the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, bombing.”
