On Tuesday, California Democrats invoked the Orlando terror attack to push a body of gun control bills known as “Gunpocalypse.” The list of bills consists of roughly 10 new gun controls, which cover everything from “high capacity” magazine bans to limits on the number of rifles a person can buy each month.
The gun controls also take away the “bullet button” — a feature that allowed the possessor of a rifle to use the point of a bullet to depress a button and release an empty magazine. Democrats argue that being able to change magazines too quickly enables mass shooters to kill with greater efficiency.
Breitbart News previously reported that “Gunpocalypse” also includes an ammunition background check requirement, whereby would-be purchasers of a box of ammunition will have go through the same type of background checks as gun purchasers — which is the same background check that alleged Orlando gunman Omar Mateen passed for his guns.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Assembly Public Safety Committee passed all the gun controls on Tuesday.
Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) praised the panel passage of “Gunpocalypse,” saying, “There’s no time to be lackadaisical on this issue. Forty-nine people were massacred, were mowed down quite easily with high-powered weapons, so it gives us more of a sense of urgency.”
De León was countered by the Firearms Policy Coalitions’s Craig DeLuz, who said, “What the Legislature did was take advantage of yet another tragedy in order to advance an agenda that harms citizens. Every time they seek to disarm citizens they make victims out of them.”
