A three-month-old pure-bred German Shepherd pup that was stolen at gunpoint from her 14-year-old owner by two men in San Leandro, California on Monday night has been found safe. Police have reunited the duo.
Maya’s owner, whose name is being withheld, told local ABC News affiliate ABC 7 that he was “kind of anxious to see her” and that he “got all excited” when he received the phone call that his puppy was found and would soon be returned to him safely.
The incident reportedly took place around 8:30 p.m. on Monday while the boy was walking Maya on Dayton Avenue. Two men in a silver or grey-colored Mercedes-Benz rolled up and tried to snatch her. When the teen refused, they drew the gun on him.
Maya was reportedly stolen and sold on the street for several hundred dollars. A friend of the neighbor who purchased Maya noticed her picture on the TV. San Leandro Police Dept Lt. Robert McManus told ABC 7 that “He convinced the friend who had Maya to relinquish her so that she could reunite the dog with her 14-year-old owner.”
“People dog-nap all kinds of dogs, sometimes for breeding, sometimes for fighting,” Rebecca Katz, who heads Oakland Animal Services, told the San Francisco Chronicle.
