Two Swedish doctoral students at Stanford University who stopped fellow student Brock Turner, 20, in the process of raping an incapacitated female student, 22, outside of a frat party last year are being hailed as heroes.
“The guy stood up, and then we saw she wasn’t moving still. So we called him out on it. And the guy ran away, my friend Peter chased after him,” Carl-Fredrik Arndt said of his friend, Peter Jonsson, in an interview with the local CBS News affiliate in San Francisco. The men said the unidentified female victim was unconscious the whole time.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the victim called Arndt and Jonsson heroes during a statement she made in the courtroom. “I sleep with two bicycles that I drew taped above my bed to remind myself there are heroes in this story,” the unidentified woman said. “That we are looking out for one another.”
The rape victim said she discovered what happened to her “sitting at my desk reading the news at work. I learned what happened to me the same time everyone else in the world learned.”
Outrage was sparked over Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky’s decision to hand down a 6-month jail sentence to Turner instead of the original suggestion, which was between six to 14 years.
Despite criticism over Judge Persky’s decision, and calls for him to be removed from his bench, Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen said he does not believe Persky should be removed from his post.
