WESTMINSTER, California — Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton said during a Friday afternoon rally at the Westminster Rose Center that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is running for president for selfish reasons.
“He is in it for himself all the way. And that is why we cannot let him near the White House,” Clinton told the crowd of several hundred people who had gathered to hear her speak.
She did not address swirling controversy about her own ties to Wall Street and foreign donors to the Clinton Foundation, which her opponents have raised on the campaign trail.
“If you look at national security, [Trump] is disqualified,” Clinton added, reminding the audience that she had the honor of working as Secretary of State under President Barack Obama.
Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) introduced Clinton and praised her for visiting the congressional caucuses of many minority groups. “She reached out to all of us … she listened to all of our concerns with so much attentiveness, with so much compassion … she gets it, on so many issues,” Chu said.
“Some people make fun of me. ‘Oh, there she goes. More plans.’ I know it’s not the most exciting thing,” as she rolled a list off her platform points.
She then blasted Trump for his Trump University saying several of his students had to take out loans and get into debt “so they can go to his Trump U,” to which the audience started chuckling. “That does sound appropriate, doesn’t it? I’m going to have to use that more often,” she said. “Because if he gets anywhere near the White House you know what he’s gonna do. He’s gonna Trump U!”
Clinton has earned the support of many women this election cycle. Melissa Fox, 48, is an attorney at law who is running for Irvine City Council. She was present with her son Max, 17, who is turning 18 in August and intends to vote for the very first time.
“I was an Obama person in 2008; I kind of got pulled away,” she told Breitbart News. “And then, the day after the election I realized how much it had meant to me to have a woman president, especially as a woman in politics,” she said, as tears welled up in her eyes. “Although I supported our president, I felt like I had kind of betrayed myself. So now, I’m ready to stand tall and do the right thing and vote for the most qualified person.”
Fox said “I’m proud that my son [Max] will cast his first ballot for Hillary Clinton and for his mother.”
Another female supporter in the enthusiastic audience decorated her car as the “Hillcar” to promote Clinton’s candidacy.
Clinton also referred to her attacks on Trump the day before.”You know, yesterday in San Diego I gave a whole speech,” Clinton told the crowd, at which the audience burst out into applause. “I appreciate your attention, maybe watching it online and… Because I believe with all my heart, and if I weren’t running for president myself, I would still be saying this to anybody who would listen: Donald Trump is not qualified to be president and commander-in-chief.”
In a final jab at Trump, whose motto has been “Make America Great Again,” Clinton said: “I believe we have problems, but we already are great.” She finished her talk by reminding everyone present to show up to their appropriate polling place on Tuesday, June 7 for the California primary, where she will face off against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for 475 coveted delegates.
“So, please help me,” Clinton said.
