National pro-life activists held a demonstration in Sacramento on Wednesday calling California Attorney General Kamala Harris to resign, after her deputies raided the apartment of undercover journalist David Daleiden last week.
Activists led by millennial pro-life organization Students for Life of America (SFLA) held a “#KorruptKamala” event, where they protested Harris’s apparent abuse of power.
Harris is also a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2016, and currently leads the field of candidates to replace retiring liberal Democrat Barbara Boxer.
The California Attorney General received thousands of dollars in contributions from Planned Parenthood for her re-election campaign, and now has seized the personal property of the journalist. Datelined had served as the project lead for the Center for Medical Progress (CMP), which uncovered the abortion business’s apparent practices of harvesting the body parts of aborted babies for subsequent sale above cost, and of altering the position of babies during abortion to harvest the most intact organs.
“I was proud to stand with the pro-life generation today and call for the resignation of California Attorney General Kamala Harris, a corrupt politician bought and paid for by Planned Parenthood and their allies,” said president of SFLA Kristan Hawkins, in a statement sent to Breitbart News.
“It wasn’t until AG Harris was called out in the media for her lack of urgency when it came to investigating David Daleiden that she sent a small army of agents to raid David’s one-bedroom apartment,” Hawkins said.
A Los Angeles Times column by Robin Abcarian on March 25 criticized Harris for dragging her feet on Daleiden’s case, following a bizarre and controversial indictment of Daleiden and a colleague by a Houston grand jury that supposedly was investigating Planned Parenthood.
Abcarian wrote:
It took a Texas grand jury only two months to reject claims that Planned Parenthood had illegally trafficked in fetal tissue, and instead indict two antiabortion activists whose elaborate plans blew up in their faces. That was some swift poetic justice.
But what’s taking California so long?
In July, our politically ambitious attorney general, Kamala Harris, vowed to “carefully review” the “Center for Medical Progress.”
“So who is next?” asks Hawkins. “What group or individual will Harris exact political revenge upon next? This is exactly the kind of corrupt behavior from politicians Americans are fed up with. It’s time for AG Harris to resign.”
Last week, feminist Camille Paglia took her own Democratic Party to task when she asserted the left is using abortion as an “ideological tool” to raise campaign cash and drive votes.
At Salon, Paglia, who supports abortion rights, wrote:
I profoundly respect the pro-life viewpoint, which I think has the moral high ground. I wrote in “No Law in the Arena”: “We career women are arguing from expedience: it is personally and professionally inconvenient or onerous to bear an unwanted child. The pro-life movement, in contrast, is arguing that every conception is sacred and that society has a responsibility to protect the defenseless.”
Teen pro-life activist Veronica Fealy of the Bay-area group, Shield for the Unborn, spoke at the Sacramento event.
“As prolife students, we reach out to as much of our society as possible, and we do this because we are aware that abortion is the biggest injustice of our time,” she said. “We do this because we have witnessed the pain that the abortion industry has brought into our society. We do this because we know we deserve better. We are the pro-life generation and we will abolish abortion.”
Abortion political advocacy organization NARAL, however, praised Harris for resisting what it termed the “partisan scare tactics” of the pro-life community.
NARAL president Ilyse Hogue said in a statement:
Kamala Harris is a consummate professional who won’t let bullying stop her from doing her job as attorney general and investigating whether indicted anti-choice activist David Daleiden broke any laws in California, just as the grand jury in Texas found he did when they brought felony charges against him.
Instead of supporting the attorney general’s efforts, anti-choice groups have chosen to protest Kamala Harris in an attempt stop this legal investigation from getting to the truth. These groups’ true agenda is clear: to use any means necessary—including hiding the truth about their leaders’ activities—to ban abortion and take away Americans’ constitutionally protected right to reproductive health care. We commend Attorney General Harris for standing up to these scare tactics and doing the job she was elected to do on behalf of all Californians.
Fealy, however, called Daleiden a role model and a “hero” of millennials in the pro-life movement.
“David first became active in the pro-life movement back when he was a student just like us, and has since spent years of his life uncovering the horrific truth about the abortion industry,” she said in Sacramento. “He has inspired many young people, like me, to take a stand. He taught us to ignore our apathy, and courageously go forward with truth.”
Fealy said it is difficult to trust that Harris will protect the citizens of her state from criminals after going after someone who has taken risks to uncover the corruption in Planned Parenthood.
“Instead of acknowledging evidence against Planned Parenthood, and investigating them, she tries to silence and intimidate the messenger,” Fealy said. “However, everyone here today stands with David and we will not be silenced. If she can violate the privacy of an innocent pro-life person so boldly, what makes us think she won’t do that to someone else?”
Some abortion rights advocates have also questioned the indictment of Daleiden and his colleague in Texas. Two pro-choice law professors wrote that the indictment of the investigative journalists – instead of Planned Parenthood – amounted to “a stunning act of legal jujitsu,” and that it was was a “deeply disturbing” outcome both for the First Amendment and undercover citizen journalists attempting to expose corruption.
The indictment by a grand jury convened by Harris County Texas District Attorney Devon Anderson is widely suspected of undue bias. Live Action News reported that the Harris County grand jury did not even vote on Planned Parenthood’s case. One of Anderson’s top campaign contributors was discovered to be the attorney of Douglas Karpen, one of the most notorious late-term abortionists in the nation.
Though Planned Parenthood and its supporters have denied any wrongdoing in the sale of body parts, the group also released a statement last October announcing it will no longer accept payments for aborted fetal tissue.
The organization and its leftwing media supporters continue to insist that the videos, produced by CMP, were “deceptively edited.”
However, a Democrat opposition research firm named Fusion – hired by Planned Parenthood itself to review the videos – said that while their analysts observed the videos had been edited, “the analysis did not reveal widespread evidence of substantive video manipulation.”
Additionally, Fusion noted, “[A]nalysts found no evidence that CMP inserted dialogue not spoken by Planned Parenthood staff.”
An analysis by Coalfire, a third-party forensics company hired by Alliance Defending Freedom, found that the videos were “not manipulated” and that they are “authentic.”
