California Had More Hate Groups In 2015 Than Any State In Nation

Figures compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) show that California had more hate groups in 2015 than any other state.

Attention was focused on hate groups in California following the now infamous February 27 KKK rally in Anaheim.

According to CBS SF, SPLC found “892 [hate] groups” in existence in the US.  Sixty-eight of those groups had a presence in California in 2015. The SPLC points out that the figure of 892 is nearly a “14 percent” increase over the number that existed in 2014. And the groups aren’t limited to stereotypical race-based organizations. Groups focused against Muslims are up “45 percent” from 2014.

SPLC senior fellow Mark Potok explained that the numerical growth of hate groups is almost secondary to the violence tied to “extremists” allegedly linked to some of the groups. Potok said, “While the number of extremist groups grew in 2015 after several years of declines, the real story was the deadly violence committed by extremists in city after city.”

Five KKK members were “arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon” following the Anaheim rally. “Seven of the counter protesters were arrested on suspicion of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury.”
