LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Elan Carr earned the backing of several high-profile GOP figures in his bid for the 5th District Board of Supervisors seat.
Pritzker Group managing partner Anthony Pritzker, a major GOP national bundler who was a key figure in Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential bid, will host a reception in support of Carr at his home in Los Angeles on Monday.
The event is co-hosted by former RNC finance committee chair and Republican Jewish Coalition board of directors member Elliott Broidy, major GOP power player and attorney Michel Tuchin, RJC board member Ron Plotkin, and real estate investor and philanthropist Adam Milstein.
A poll conducted by the Carr campaign and released in November showed Carr with an early lead over rival Republican city councilman Mitchell Englander. The race for the 5th District Supervisor’s seat is expected to be tightly contested. Current 5th District Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich will vacate his seat this year due to term limits.
Carr campaign chief strategist John Thomas said that support from national GOP figures is significant in a local supervisor’s race.
“Not only are we first in the polls, but major national GOP figures are choosing to put their name on the line and weigh in on a local race,” Thomas told Breitbart News in a statement. “It’s a big boost for an already surging campaign for Supervisor.”
Carr faces competition from a crowded field of candidates for the 5th District Supervisor’s seat. State Senate Minority Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar), Antonovich’s current chief of staff Kathryn Barger, and Glendale Councilman Ara Najarian all Republicans, are running, as is Democrat businessman Raj Pal Kahlon. Altadena councilmember Bill Malone and South Pasadena businessman Alan Reynolds, unaffiliated with political parties, are also running for the vacant seat.
Carr ran for the 33rd District congressional seat in 2014 and ran television advertisements in that campaign, which could give him a name recognition boost among voters in Southern California. In June, Carr secured the endorsement of the Peace Officers Research Association of California, which bills itself the largest law enforcement organization in the state, with more than 60,000 members.
Meanwhile, Barger has received the endorsement of her boss, the outgoing Antonovich.
In an email to Breitbart News, Carr, who has campaigned heavily on his background as a gang prosecutor, said it was “wonderful to add [the GOP backers’] support to an already surging campaign.”
“We are honored to have support from so many leaders throughout the community,” said Carr. “It’s clear they are concerned about safety both from terrorists and gangs. I promise to work every day to make every family in L.A. County safer.”
