On Saturday night an identified man was shot and killed aboard a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train as it pulled into the West Oakland platform.
A male passenger and two nurses performed CPR–including chest compressions–on the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred around 7:30 pm.
According to the Contra Costa Times, when the shots rang out some passengers crouched down in place, others fled out the doors that had just opened on the train cars.
The gunman was not apprehended. He is described as “as a tall, thin and bald black man wearing jeans, a hooded jacket, red-and-black boxers and tan boots. ” No gun was discovered on the scene, but police say the deceased victim had “some sort of knife” on his person.
“Authorities removed the body shortly before midnight, and early Sunday morning three of the cars on the six-car train were taken to a maintenance yard as part of the investigation.”
At least one individual matching the suspect’s description was detained then released following the shooting.
BART officials say there is not evidence that the attack was terror-based.
