US Strategic Command says strange lights in the Northern California sky on the night of December 22 were “some kind of Russian space debris.”

According to KCRA, Lt. Colonel Martin L. O’Donnell said, “U.S. Strategic Command’s Joint Functional Component Command for Space (JFCC Space), through the Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC), removed a Russian SL-4 rocket body from the U.S. satellite catalog as a decayed object after it reentered the atmosphere [Tuesday] over North America (vicinity Arizona).”

A witness to the light–Keith Anderson–reported “[spotting] the light over Sacramento around 6:10 p.m.” Anderson said “it was moving “at a high rate of speed” and went “from northwest to southeast, traveling across the sky in about 20 to 30 seconds.” He said there were “visible burning pieces coming from it.”

Anderson took cellphone video of the debris:

Lt. O’Donnell indicated that “JSpOC tracks 16,000 other cataloged objects orbiting Earth.”
