The Golden State Warriors have won 22 straight games to open up the current NBA season, setting a record for the best start by any team in the history of the league. So it’s no surprise that Warriors forward Andre Iguodala joked that the only way teams could defeat them is by shooting them dead.
Iggy spoke with reporters after the Warriors’ 114-98 dismantling of the New Jersey Nets on Sunday night when he was asked what the “recipe” to beat his team might be.
“Going to the gun range and learning how to shoot. Kill us all,” Iguodala replied with a smile, according to ESPN.
When the reporter asked him if he meant to say “shoot” in the context of basketball, Iguodala repeated the joke.
“No, that’s the only way you gonna beat us: if you shoot us and kill us and we can’t play,” he replied. “That was a joke.”
The reporter told Iggy he wanted a serious response, to which the player responded: “No, that’s for real. I’m serious.” But, he went on to add: “I think teams just try to throw different looks at us, and we just have a very versatile group of guys, we mix up our matchups. For every action, I think we have a reaction for it, and [that] will help us win.”
ESPN reported that “some took issue” with Iguodala’s joke, coming as it did on the same night that President Obama delivered a primetime address from the Oval Office in the wake of the terror attack in San Bernardino that claimed the lives of 14 people last week.
While some media outlets like BET and the San Francisco Examiner called Iguodala’s comments “a really bad joke” and a “verbal misfire,” respectively, most on Twitter brushed off the comments as little more than a way of saying the Warriors simply cannot be beaten.
