A man has been arrested in California for the theft of a duplicate of O.J. Simpson’s 1968 Heisman trophy, stolen in 1994 from a display case at USC.
The Los Angeles district attorney’s office reports that Lewis Eugene Starks Jr., 56, was arraigned on one count of receiving stolen property.
USC’s trophy turned up missing not long after cops arrested Simpson for the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman.
Prosecutors say that the trophy came to light last year when Starks tried to sell it. The item was recovered last December after the sale became known but no one was charged at the time. Both the school and the player received identical Heisman Trophies.
Police reported that a warrant for phone records revealed the location of the trophy and the investigation continued until this month when the arrest was announced.
Simpson also received a trophy but he sold it trying to raise cash for his many legal debts.
