Kansas Sec. Of State: KS Supreme Court ‘Every Bit’ As Left-Wing As California’s

During an August 8 picnic hosted by the Sedgwick County Republican Party, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach claimed the GOP has made Kansas “No. 1 when it comes to supporting our right to keep and bear arms,” but said the state’s Supreme Court remains “every bit” as left-wing that as California’s Supreme Court.

According to The Witchita Eagle, Kobach said that in 2005 Kansas “did not [even] accommodate concealed carry.” But by 2015, the GOP had been able to change laws in Kansas so that the state now stands with Alaska, Arizona, Maine, Vermont, and Wyoming as states that allow residents to carry a gun openly or concealed without a permit.

Moreover, Kobach explained that GOP legislators and Governor Sam Brownback (R) were able to put laws in place shielding Kansas’ gun owners from certain federal gun controls and declaring that “federal legislation does not apply to Kansas-made guns and ammunition that never leaves the state.”

But Kobach stressed the Kansas Supreme Court does not reflect this same concern for protecting the constitutional liberties of Kansans. Rather, he drew a comparison with California’s left-wing court, saying, “The California Supreme Court is arguably one of the most left-wing supreme courts in America. The Kansas Supreme Court is every bit as bad, and you can quote me on that.”
He added, “Judges actively place themselves in a legislative posture and change the law. That’s what the Kansas Supreme Court does.”
