Police helicopters spotted 13 young great white sharks feeding merely 50 feet from the sands of Sunset Beach this week.
There were reportedly no swimmers or surfers in the area at the time of the sighting, which took place around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The sightings arrive on the heels of Memorial Day Weekend; one of the busiest beach-going weekends of the year. The warmer water conditions are also believed to attribute to the growth rates of juvenile sharks. The Times points out that the Huntington Beach Wetlands Complex and Bolsa Chica Full Tidal Basin have been making efforts to restore fish nurseries which are also believed to contribute to increasing shark populations along the coast.
Several other shark sightings have taken place in recent weeks. Six or more 5-6 foot sharks were spotted near Seal Beach and Huntington Beach on May 11. And in April, two 5-7 foot sharks On May 11, at least six 5- to 6-foot sharks were seen near Seal Beach and Huntington Beach.
Authorities are urging beach goers, swimmers and surfers to report any shark sightings to authorities.
