Cute Sea Lion Pup Wanders Through Streets of San Francisco

An adorable, male sea lion pup named “Rubbish” managed to waddle his way around San Francisco’s Marina district for about 30 minutes early Thursday morning.

Neighbors reportedly first spotted the sea lion hiding beneath a car parked on Marina Boulevard around 6:30 a.m. and contacted the Marine Mammal Center which arrived 30 minutes later, according to local CBS News affiliate in San Francisco. He was so weak that he rested his little head on the sidewalk and his small body spread on the street.

“Rubbish”, who is 10-months-old has a history of being recused. He had been found malnourished by the Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center in February and was treated for pneumonia before being released on March 23 after gaining 17 pounds, CBS reports.

However 5 short weeks later, he lost all the weight he’d gained back and had likely taken to the streets in search of food.

Hundreds of sea lions are reportedly suffering from malnourishment and starving to death due to difficulty in reaching sources of nourishment like anchovies, herring and sardines that have increasingly made their way deeper beneath the ocean’s surface seeking cooler temperatures.

CBS reports that the Mammal Center has rescued more sea lions in the first four months of this year than in all of 2014.
