On April 26, The Wall Street Journal claimed California is one of a handful of states that will be ground zero for the battle between gun control and gun rights in the foreseeable future.
Gun control proponents have largely turned away from Washington, D.C., viewing the Republican’s midterm landslides as a clear signal that gun control at the federal level is done. Now, they are turning their attention to states where Democrats are entrenched–states like California–in hopes of getting as much gun control passed at the state level as possible.
According to the WSJ, the gun control lobby is mimicking the efforts of gun rights groups with this approach: gun rights groups focused on state legislatures when Democrats held sway in D.C. Now, the shoe is on the other foot.
The newspaper suggests, “With the gun debate focused on state-level politics, high-profile shootings will exacerbate the division between these two Americas: in restrictive states, a demand for more laws; in permissive states, a demand for more guns.”
They also suggest that in “restrictive” states like California, “smart guns” will be pushed legislatively and marketed by “gun entrepreneurs.”
Already this year, Breitbart News reported that CA state Senator Jerry Hill (D-Dist. 13) proposed a smart gun mandate, state Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) proposed a law barring concealed carry on campus, and state Attorney General Kamala Harris is supporting a continuation of a ban on handgun advertisements in CA gun store windows, among other things.
If The Wall Street Journal is correct, these gun control proposals and laws are but the tip of the iceberg, and Californians can expect a push for many more as the year continues.
