A man was shot and killed Saturday night at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue in the fourth violent incident to occur in the area in the past 19 months.
An unidentified victim in his 30s was shot multiple times in the torso and head around 11:40 p.m. and later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital, CBS Los Angeles’ KCAL-9 reported. Police arrested Michael Vincent Carter, 23, a known San Fernando Valley gang member. He is being held on $1 million bail.
According to CBS, Carter and the victim got into an altercation before five or six shots were fired and Carter fled on foot. Witnesses were ultimately able to identify Carter to authorities at the scene. Police believe the shooting is gang-related.
The incident is just the latest in a series of violent crimes that have rocked the Hollywood tourist haven.
Last month, a man was stabbed in the back at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue following an altercation with another man. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
In December 2014, a man was shot and killed at the same intersection. The man was reportedly waving a knife at approaching police officers, who opened fire. That shooting triggered protests associated with the “Black Lives Matter” protests.
In June 2013, 23-year-old Christina Calderon was stabbed to death by two men, again at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland. Calderon’s mother told KCAL-9 that her daughter was not doing anything wrong at the time.
