Two Men Detained in Connection With ‘Gruesome’ S.F. Body Parts Case

The San Francisco Police Department detained “a person of interest” Friday evening after receiving an anonymous tip related to video footage police released after the gruesome discovery of human remains inside an abandoned suitcase on Wednesday.

Police did not know if the “person of interest” had committed a crime, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. They do know that the video footage caught him in the area where the suitcase was discovered Wednesday outside of a Goodwill As-Is store in San Francisco’s Mission District.

The unidentified man was led out of his Turk Street apartment covered in a white sheet and was reportedly working with detectives, Officer Grace Gatpandan, spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department, said.

A second person was also detained, the Chronicle notes. His connection to the case was reportedly not revealed.

A pedestrian initially discovered the morbid package around 4:15 p.m. and flagged down police to alert them to what would later become the grisly discovery of human body parts mixed in with garbage. More human remains were reportedly found two hours later, near the original scene of the crime.

The victim’s remains were described as belonging to a “light-skinned male,” according to the San Francisco medical examiner. The Chronicle notes that his identity and cause and manner of death were not yet known.
