Thursday’s suspected Ebola patient, who was monitored at UC Davis Medical Center Sacramento, tested negative for the virus in results released Friday morning, according to officials from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services, and the medical center.
The patient had been transferred to the medical center using a specialized ambulance Thursday morning after exhibiting symptoms consistent with the deadly illness. Recent travel to an Ebola-effected country heightened suspicion about the patient’s potential Ebola infection, but testing delivered a negative result.
“We will continue to work together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with hospitals and local health departments across California to quickly identify individuals who could potentially be at risk of Ebola, and take quick action in order to protect the health and safety of all California residents,” CDPH State Epidemiologist and Deputy Director, Center for Infectious Diseases, Dr. Gil Chavez, said in a CDPH statement.
Sacramento County Health Officer Olivia Kasirye stated, “The expediency of this investigation also preserves resources and allows staff to resume other investigations.”
As for the still ill patient, UC Davis Medical Center Chief Medical Officer J. Douglas Kirk said, “The patient remains in good condition and we will continue to provide ongoing medical care.”
